Back on Track, CSI:Miami fanfiction

One day, out of the blue, I thought, "What if after the few mistakes we've seen on-screen..."
And this fanfiction was thus created. Although this is quite late already, seeing as I've finished watching Season6 and still, here I am writing about Season5.
Ah, well.

Title: Back on Track
Type: One-shot
Words: 360
Pairing: Eric/Ryan (HardyBoys)
Warnings: Slashy hints. Don't like, don't read. Minor spoilers for Season 5, episodes 14 to 16 and 18.
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: CBS, Anthony E. Zuiker, Carol Mendelsohn and Ann Donahue own CSI:Miami. Sadly, I don't.
Summary: Eric Delko's stubborn determination was not the only thing that kept him away from more screw-ups.
Beta: -

Back on Track

"C'mon man, give it over."

Eric Delko stared suspiciously at the outstretched hand.

"We're not on the same case today," Ryan Wolfe reminded him exasperatedly, "I have to do this now so I won't bite everyone's head off later."

There were many arguments that the darker man could win over his co-worker. An OCD-induced frustration was one of the few occasions where he knew victory was not his.

Surrendering over his kit, Eric slumped down on the locker room bench beside the other man and watched him do what he had to. Ryan dove straight to the bottles of reagents first and worked his way through the kit, checking every single item thoroughly before putting them back in their rightful places.

After two long minutes that ended too soon, the kit was shut with a click. The rare moment of peace dissipated, leaving Eric with the realization that he had been sitting too close to Ryan; their sides pressed together from arm to foot and his chin hovered just above the shorter man's left shoulder.

Neither of them made a move to shift away.

"You didn't come back too soon. Just don't push us away." Ryan's steady timbre sounded louder in the quiet space they had unknowingly created, his unspoken words equally amplified.

Eric felt something clench tight within his chest while the scar at the back of his head ached in response. He let the hand on his right knee slide until it rested against the other's warm jeans-clad thigh, and finally allowed his chin to drop onto the shoulder he was breathing over.

It was difficult to not fall back into their old routine of defensiveness and superficial annoyance. It was the easiest way that had worked for them. This time, Eric did not want the "easiest way", something he knew Ryan would readily agree on, especially after getting brushed off when he was only being understanding about the problems with double vision.

Sighing, Eric nodded a long-overdue reply against Ryan's neck, hoping that the silent gesture managed to say everything he could not. After all, his career was not the only thing he wanted back on track.

fin.

Completed 17 June 2008, 4:58 p.m. During work. Hah. I love it when I still get paid while slacking off.

*I've just realised that Eric didn't say a single word in this fic. Heh...

Oh this was absolutely brilliant! It's this quiet moment together in a time where everything is kinda hectic and worrysome (sp?) and the boys are just so cuddly and cute together! Don't you wanna squeeze them? Awesome!

Thanks!
I was wondering if this fic didn't have the oomph! I had planned for in the beginning. Then again, the initial draft had too many things inside and I had to take out the irrelevant parts. Thought I was going to do a major!fluff preslash 100 word drabble (am totally rubbish at drabbles of any sort actually) but they decided to go all cuddly on me and I went beyond the word limit.
Who could resist them?

Squeeze away! Might need to straighten them out first, I got too enthusiastic when I was squeezing them myself.

It's "worrisome". I just HAD to check the dictionary. I forget spellings at random times myself =P

I tried typing both worrisome and worrysome and then look at it as if seeing them would jog my memory as to which one is correct. But it didn't work, so I just picked one randomly :p
And yay! *squeezes Hardy Boys*

I do that too! Only, I write the words out. See which ones feel more natural and "right". If nothing pops out, I'll stare at them. Funny thing is, the longer you look at them, the more alien the words will look.

Yeah, that is so weird. Eventually, all of them will look strange and none of them right.

And that would be the point when I start to laugh at myself and go get a dictionary instead, which is something I should have done but am too lazy to get my bum off wherever I was sitting. Haha...

I loved this! Ryan was so gentle with Eric. They didn't even have to talk for us to see how much they care about each other.

We don't really see how Ryan handled their relationship on-screen after Eric got shot but from the one time he tried to be supportive with the double-vision? I melted when he stared after Eric when he dismissed him. He so clearly wants to help and I'm stuck between wanting to shove Eric into Ryan's arms and wanting to feel all the angst. Heh =P Am an angst junkie.

I love how you managed this. I thought it was fitting that Ryan was the only one who spoke; like an imagery through Eric's eyes. Thank you for sharing this!

Yay! Thank YOU for commenting!
Good to know that I did this right. Had some doubts about the whole fic in the beginning.

And wouldn't we all want to know how Eric sees Ryan!
*imagines*

I like it! The unspoken reply said so much. It's interesting to imagine that Calleigh wasn't the only one looking after Eric. Ryan and his OCD were there too. Good job! :D

Glad you like it!

Me thinks the Miami team is more like "a family" than "co-workers/friends".
And they all worry about Eric, it's just that Ryan's more straight forward than Calleigh and her tact, from what I watched on-screen.
Oh oh, and I'd imagine that Ryan's OCD will frustrate him if he didn't get to check Eric's kit even once. Glad you liked that part =)

I'd love to watch it happen too. We could always try to... "suggest" things to CBS as a feedback. Hmm...

Oh...goody, I really have to read up on all your fics now. This is sooooo great! And I'd have loved to see this on the show. It's amazing that you have them down so spot on in such a short fic. I'm always impressed by someone who's able to do this. Well done!!!

Thanks!
I wish they showed more Eric/Ryan scenes post Man Down other than the "Eric not liking Ryan acting concerned" thing. I thought they were past that! Then again: Men. Never get your hopes up.

I don't have a lot of fanfics, actually. I rarely get the good ideas and momentum for writing fanfics, or short fics, for that matter. Still, glad that you enjoyed this ^_^

You just mentioned another moment when I could have kicked Eric's ass. Ryan was so nice to him and obviously trying to help and Eric was his usual "asshole" self ! I also wished they had explored Ryan's reaction to Eric's being shot more. It was obvious how upset Ryan was. Ah well...we're talking CIS Miami here...not much sense in dwelling on there "non-exploring" character development ;)

Well, that's what fanfictions are for! At least for csi:miami.
